Physical Characteristics

Yellowish-reddish light to medium brown skin with straight or wavy hair. Short, mesoskelic, often endomorph, sometimes ectomorph. Mildly brachycephalic, hypsicranic. Short, often depressed, mesorrhine nose. Infantile. Face round, low and wide with bulbous features, chin receding with a mild prognathy. Mongolian fold weak.

Historical Background

The proper Palaungid variety, typical for the Central Burmese hill tribes, also in Yunnan, Himalaya, South Tibet, Thailand, and parts of India. The name derives from the Palaung tribe (Burmese: "mountain people"). Older than Shanid, younger than Veddids. Typical in Palaung, Wa, Rian, Pa'O and related people. Mixed in Burmese, Karen, Kachin, Shan, Sri Lankans, Tai, South Chinese, Munda, Juang, and many more.
